Online Safety at Kirkheaton Primary School

At Kirkheaton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child understands their right to feel safe, both in the physical and digital world. Our approach to online safety is rooted in our core values of Respect, Rights, Resilience, and Responsibility, and is embedded across the curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.

We teach our pupils how to navigate the online world with confidence and care—whether they are using a computer, tablet, mobile phone, gaming device, or smart technology. Through age-appropriate lessons in Computing, PSHE, and assemblies, children learn how to:

  • Recognise and respond to unsafe or inappropriate content
  • Understand the importance of privacy and personal information
  • Communicate respectfully and responsibly online
  • Build resilience to peer pressure and digital risks
  • Know where and how to seek help if something doesn’t feel right

Importantly, we give our children a voice—empowering them to speak up, ask questions, and make informed choices about their digital lives. We encourage open conversations and provide safe spaces for children to share concerns and learn from real-life scenarios.

We also work in partnership with parents and carers, sharing regular updates, guidance, and resources to help families support their children at home. By working together, we can ensure that our pupils are not only safe online but also confident, respectful digital citizens.

Please see our safeguarding policy and behaviour policy for further guidance.
